How Hot Weather Affects Your Vehicle

Summer 2026 has officially become the hottest on record in the UK. We are currently experiencing our fourth consecutive heatwave, while around half of England is now in drought conditions. With soaring temperatures putting pressure on both people and vehicles, it's more important than ever to make sure your car is ready for the heat.

Extreme weather doesn't just make driving uncomfortable, it can also increase the risk of breakdowns. High temperatures place extra strain on your vehicle's cooling system, battery, tyres, engine oil and air conditioning.

If your car hasn't been serviced recently, the heat can quickly expose problems that may have gone unnoticed during cooler weather.

Long journeys, heavy traffic and high temperatures can all take their toll on your car. One of the biggest concerns is engine overheating, particularly if coolant levels are low or your cooling system isn't performing as it should.

If your air conditioning isn't working properly, even a short journey can become uncomfortable and tiring. A hot vehicle can reduce concentration and increase driver fatigue, so it's worth getting your system checked before setting off. •    Extra water, food and suitable restraints for any pets travelling with you
